WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 25, 2005)—American University’s Kogod School of Business announced today that it will be the first business school in the world to provide BlackBerry 7100t™ phones from T-Mobile USA, and T-Mobile HotSpot wireless broadband service to 300 graduate business students and faculty.

Beginning February 1, 2005, graduate students, who are admitted for fall and pay their tuition deposit, will receive a BlackBerry 7100t and access to the T-Mobile HotSpot Service.

The BlackBerry 7100t will have a Real Simple Streaming (RSS) reader to access actively pushed streams of Web content including, coursework, graduate admissions, job listings, and internal information. The BlackBerry 7100t and Web site streaming will be fully integrated into the business school’s academic experience and operational infrastructure during 2005. Text messaging and the T-Mobile HotSpot wireless broadband service also will be incorporated into the experience, with Web streams available via laptop computers.

Because the entire American University campus is wireless, the ability to use streaming technology on multiple devices is especially easy. Additional streams will be launched during the Spring 2005 semester to give students the latest information to enhance their business skills and knowledge of current technology on the market.

“We’re standing at the exciting forefront of new technologies that will indeed enhance and expand the academic experience for business students,” said Dr. William DeLone, acting dean of the Kogod School of Business. “Armed with RSS, we are going to bring business information to students in real-time rather than relying on the time-consuming process of ‘search and surf’ of numerous Web sites. In doing so, we are the first business school to make the leap into using RSS technology to advance the academic and operational processes within a business school. We also will be the first business school to integrate the use of BlackBerry devices throughout those same operations and academic functions.”

American University, ranked as one of the Top 10 wireless campuses in the nation by Intel, will consider rolling out this plan to other academic units, depending on the project’s success. In 2002, American University converted campus-wide to a wireless system to handle voice, data and messaging.

AU’s Kogod School of Business, the HotSpot for Business Educationsm, responds to the business community’s demand for a global manager who can effectively use information and technology in a variety of disciplines. The Wall Street Journal and BusinessWeek have ranked Kogod, located at www.kogod.american.edu, among the top business schools in the country.
